After weeks of practice, the MS Track and Field team competed against six other schools at the Whitmore Lake Invitational. Boys took 5th and Girls took 3rd.
For many this was their first meet and for some the first one in two years. Sofia Salinas led the way with a 1st place finish in the 55m hurdles and a narrow victory in the 800m, with only a .1 second difference between her and her teammate Natalie Gibbs who took 2nd. Natalie also took first place in the 400m after going from 3rd to 1st in the last 50 meters of the race, as well as 2nd in the 1600m. 6th-grader Dallas Tolbert took 1st in Long Jump in commanding fashion and 1st in the 100m. The boys’ 4×800 relay came down to the wire with a photo finish at the end, with the boys taking 3rd. The relay team consisted of Goni Wong, Leif Axelarris, Trent Tacke, and Carter Koenigsknecht. Veteran Matthew Salinas and Ren Yamamoto had strong performances in their 400m and 1600m runs respectively. Benjamin Chapoutot had a solid showing in Shot Put, throwing for 16’10” and anchored a 4 x 200m relay team consisting of Noah Gibbs, Chase Martin, and Julius Levine, all of whom participated in their first ever meet. Sadie Bagne, Meadow Burch, Amir Al-din Ware were competitive in their 70m and 100m races, and Hope Carmona showed amazing grit in her first 800m finish. Meira Gable had a strong showing in the 200m as well, running a 36.64. The team looks forward to improve upon their times and performances at next week’s meet at Whitmore Lake on Thursday.
